Web design and SEO for Brantford, Paris and the County of Brant

Forest City Green

The City of Brantford and the County of Brant are separate municipalities, so a Brantford address does not automatically reach customers in Paris or St. George. A Brantford business site has to name the communities it actually serves. I build them from London, about 95 km away, by phone and email, and I stay the same contact from the first call onwards.

How does a studio in London work with a Brantford business?

I am one person working from London, about 95 km from downtown Brantford by the 401 and the 403, roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter without traffic, and the about page covers who I am. I meet in person with businesses in London and the towns around it; for Brantford the work runs by phone and email.

Why does it matter that Paris is not in Brantford?

The City of Brantford and the County of Brant are separate municipalities. At the 2021 Census, Statistics Canada counted 104,688 people in the city and 39,474 in the county, and the county's communities include Paris, St. George and Burford. A Brantford address says nothing on its own about whether you work in any of them, so if you do, name them.

Spell each town the same way on your site as on your Google Business Profile, and keep your business name, address and phone number identical in both, and in the Chamber of Commerce Brantford-Brant directory if you are a member. Write Paris as “Paris, Ontario” or “Paris, ON” in page titles and headings, so neither a reader nor a search engine has to guess which Paris you mean. How to set those towns up as service areas on the profile is on the page about ranking higher on Google Maps.

What a Brantford website needs to say

The City's economic development site counts about 400 industrial companies and 3,000 supporting businesses in Brantford, and names five key sectors: advanced manufacturing; film, television and digital media; food and beverage manufacturing; plastics and rubber products; and warehousing and distribution, which it says has over 40 firms in the city. If most of your work comes from those companies rather than from households, say on the homepage which of the five you work for, in plain words, because a line like “commercial and residential” tells that reader nothing.

If you are a trade working in homes across the city and the county, the pages on web design for plumbers and for contractors cover what those sites need, and a café or restaurant is covered on the restaurant page.

The one real business build I can point to is the website and back office for 5Rivers Trucking, my own family's business, and it is the nearest example if you run a warehouse, transport or distribution firm. The seven samples on the examples page are for invented businesses, not clients.

Local SEO for a Brantford business

Local SEO comes with every site I build: a page for each service, your details written to match your Google Business Profile, and the Brantford and County of Brant communities you serve named where a customer and a search engine will both read them. In Brantford that last part does more work than usual, because Brantford, Paris and St. George are three different searches.

The map listing itself is decided mostly by your Business Profile, its category and your reviews, not by the website, so the work starts there. The local SEO page covers the order to do it in, and it is the same for a Brantford business as for a London one.

Is there free help for a new Brantford business?

Yes, and it is not mine. The City of Brantford points new business owners to a free one-on-one consultation with the Brantford-Brant Business Resource Centre. It is the City's own service, with no connection to this studio.

It is worth having before you pay anyone for a website, because the site should describe the business you settle on in that conversation.

Questions people ask

Does a website cost more for a Brantford business?

No. The build prices are the same as in London: a one-time $499 for one to three pages, $899 for four to six, or $1,399 for seven to ten. Hosting is free on every plan, and the domain, $15 to $25 a year, is paid to the registrar and belongs to you.

Can a Brantford business show up in searches from Paris or St. George?

It can, if you really work there. Name the County of Brant towns you drive to as service areas on your Google Business Profile and on your site, written the same way in both places; the page on ranking higher on Google Maps covers setting them up. A business based in Paris may still come first for someone searching there.

Can my Brantford business rank in Hamilton or Cambridge searches?

Possibly, but distance works against you. Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence: how well your Business Profile matches the search, how far you are from the person searching, and how well known your business is (the line that introduces the three now calls the last one popularity). A searcher in Hamilton is closer to Hamilton businesses. If you really work there, say so on your site, but nobody can promise you the map results.

Do I need a separate page for each County of Brant town?

No. One honest page naming Paris, St. George, Burford and the other County of Brant towns you work in does better than a set of near-identical town pages, and the local SEO page explains why.
